THE ALPHA is otherwise known as the top dog of the pack. In particular, through a law that Quinn has passed as traditional, following alphas of the Grotto will almost always be male. The Alpha answers to no one and gives orders to everyone else. He is, to be frank, the core foundation of the pack, simply because he disciplines others and keeps life in order for these dogs. THE CHOSEN SPOUSE is similar to the Alpha Female but with no strict title, the Alpha’s chosen spouse only answers to the Alpha. Before becoming his chosen spouse, she probably would have been one of the concubines—or the head concubine—and by progressing to this rank, she has become off-limits to all other males in the pack; only the Alpha may breed with her. The chosen spouse has the power to discipline others, greet newcomers and drive disloyal dogs off the territory, and although she is the Alpha’s mate, she does not receive as much respect as he does. THE SUCCESSOR, most probably the firstborn son of the Alpha—although his mother could be anyone from the chosen spouse to a concubine—is the heir to Sharktooth Grotto. Although young, he can receive more respect than his mother, regardless of her rank, and is often taken under the Alpha’s wing to be taught the ways of the ruler. Before ascending to the throne, the successor has various powers: he can greet newcomers and discipline those that have done wrong.
THE BETA is the Alpha’s most trusted male in all of the pack, or a dog that he thinks is exceptionally worthy of the rank, the Beta is responsible for overseeing the pack. He has the power to take up to four females as his own personal possessions, as well. Almost as important as the Alpha himself, this dog has the power to do things that the Alpha can. This includes punishing dogs, breeding with as many females (and any that he likes—apart from the Alpha’s spouse) as he wants and welcoming newcomers into the pack. THE CHOSEN SPOUSE is equivalent to the Alpha’s spouse only in the similarity between their rank titles. The chosen spouse of the Beta is often a former concubine that has proven herself worthy of a higher rank by producing ‘worthy’ offspring. She has no power whatsoever, and is more of a trophy object than anything else, although her claim to fame is the fact that she is favoured by the Beta—and most likely the Alpha—for birthing decent litters.
THE HEAD CONCUBINE is in charge of the other concubines of the pack, almost like the matron of a hospital ward. She’s often dominant and good at handling situations, as well as pleasing to the eye and good at what she does. The head concubine has the power to select whether the concubine selected by a male is allowed to mate with him, and she is reasonably respected by both genders of the pack. THE CONCUBINES, are called prostitutes and whores in the modern world, but here, they’re an asset. Selected by a collaboration between the Alpha, Beta and Head Concubine, they’re often females that are eye-catching and ‘nice to look at,’ who have been selected for the purpose of providing the pack with a future generation. They answer mainly to the head concubine, and are given more respect than the regular females of the pack, only because they’re generally perceived as the bloodline preservers of the males of the Grotto.
THE MALES are allowed to lay claim to two females and only two. They’re only able to mate with those two females and are allowed to treat them how they like. They’re not entitled to punish others or kill any puppies—those are things reserved for their superiors—but they're better well off than the females. THE FEMALES are lowest of the low; females are used mainly for reproduction and amusement, but usually for amusement, as reproduction is what the concubines are used for. Most of the time, they’re submissive creatures, but there’s the rare arrogant bitch mixed in with them, which often provides endless amusement for the males. Often forced to do things against their will, they’re usually stuck looking after the litters or avoiding the dogs of the pack. THE OFFSPRING are the puppies of the pack; they’re often the result of rapes or consensual intercourse between the males and the concubines—or, perhaps a male and one of the lowly-ranked females. There are a few youngsters who are daughters or sons of the Alpha and haven’t been chosen as his heir, so they’re discarded and left to romp with the other litters—and the same goes for the offspring of the Beta. Female and male puppies are almost treated the same when they’re young; the differences in equality are only obvious as they mature into adults.

I. Respect is not given freely by those of Sharktooth Grotto. It is to be earned, or so Quinn believes, and until he says otherwise, it will remain that way. II. There is no such thing as equality in the pack. It does not exist here; males are thought to be worthier than females because of their stereotypical physical attributes, and that is that. III. Females who are not concubines are not to be bred with unless you have special permission from the Alpha or Beta. However, this rule is able to be broken. If a female who is not a concubine is in heat and no dog of high rank is near to tell you not to, you may breed with her, consensually or not. IV. The rank of concubine is only attainable if one of the high-ranking dogs thinks you are worthy. If you are a concubine and the head concubine tells you to breed with a specific male, you must do it. Whether he rapes you or you do it willingly is of no concern to Sharktooth Grotto; we merely want a future generation in order for the pack to survive. V. If the Alpha wants to breed with you, obey him. Likewise, if the Beta wants to breed with you, obey him, even if you’re not a concubine. They are doing it for the duty of the pack—however, if you are not a concubine and a regular male wants to breed with you, you may struggle. It is likely that he will win, I will say that now as a warning. VI. Puppies, regardless of gender, are to be treated equally. It is only when they reach two years of age that they are to be segregated and treated accordingly. VII. Any newcomers wishing to join are to be accepted by a dog of high rank. If no such dog is available, the newcomer is allowed to be accepted by anyone within the pack. VIII. A lower-ranked member having a mate is frowned upon severely. If you take up a female as your mate, you will most likely be forced apart. Likewise, if you take a concubine—or even the head concubine as your mate—you must realize that she will bear the offspring of other males of the pack before she has yours. We must share females in order for the pack to continue. IX. Pack meetings will often be held to discuss ranks, upcoming litters and the future of the current youngsters and members of the pack. It is wise that you attend these, otherwise you will lose your rank and—if you’re particularly unlucky—be punished by your superior. X. The Alpha’s chosen spouse is off-limits to everyone apart from the Alpha and the Beta. Even then, the Beta must ask permission of the Alpha to breed with his mate. However, the Beta’s chosen spouse is open for intercourse with any male that asks—you cannot just waltz up and mate with her—although the Beta has first-pick of who mates with her. She has no say in this. XI. Fights for rank are welcomed. The rank of Alpha is unchallengeable, but the Alpha’s spouse, Beta, the Beta’s spouse and the rank of Head Concubine are all challengeable. After the fight, it is the Alpha’s final decision as to who gets the rank. XII. Respect your superiors. Arrogance is not tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly. XIII. In order to obtain a strong pack, the Alpha comes first. If he falls in duty, the pack falls, and so it is he who is to be given thought before anything else. XIV. The pack looks out for itself only. It does not forge alliances with other packs unless they are necessary. Offering alliances without the permission of a superior is a punishable offence. XV. To reiterate the mating rule, females are technically owned by males (who can have two females at a time). They are not mates—we must share females, remember. However, unless a female has been laid claim to by a male of the pack and she is found wandering alone, she will not be touched. Please note that if the latter is untrue, then she falls victim to the first male that comes across her and the superiors of the pack will turn a blind eye.
